The olive oil produced here enjoys a wellestablished reputation for authenticity and quality, whilst also being a product of great economic, cultural and public health significance. Since its price is higher than that of other oils and fats, it is essential to ensure strict compliance with high standards of quality and authenticity, in order to justify this price difference to consumers. This report aims to summarise all the findings, conclusions and recommendations resulting from the audit. Scope and method of the audit The ECA examined the control systems established and implemented by the Member States (MS) and the Commission to ensure that olive oil sold in the EU is authentic, safe and traceable, and to assess whether the system of controls and sanctions applied by the MS is effective.
