Sustainability of olive groves in Portugal 131 to contribute to clarify issues surrounding vase and hedgerow olive groves —often referred to as intensive and super-intensive olive groves and viewed with suspicion by the population—through statistical and bibliographic analysis and technical information. It would be interesting to publish a new, updated version of the book containing more recent statistical data as well as new developments (e.g. scientific articles, projects) in the field of olive and olive oil production. And, possibly, to include other topics or explore some of those already mentioned in greater depth, namely regarding the agricultural workforce (e.g. impact on the rural community – basic services for the rural population; agricultural labour recruitment services – wages and contracts), other environmental challenges associated with vase and hedgerow olive groves (e.g. air quality in rural communities – pollution and odours); the olive and olive oil sector (e.g. the formation of olive and olive oil prices between producer and consumer; the organisation of production; business statistics); recognition of Portuguese olive oil (e.g. awards, quality schemes); income and investment support for the sector (e.g. PDR2020, CAPSP); morphological and genetic characteristics of the main olive varieties (e.g. drought tolerance, lifespan, resistance to diseases and pests).
