At the same time, approaches based on the valorisation of bioactive composts open up new prospects in the field of the bioeconomy, promoting the creation of products with higher added value. These solutions help to reduce pressure on natural resources, lower the costs associated with the treatment and recovery of surpluses, and foster the development of innovative products with higher added value. At the same time, they promote the development of a circular bioeconomy in the olive oil sector through the introduction of new business models and the creation of opportunities for the implementation of industrial symbiosis practices. The widespread adoption of these solutions will depend on continued efforts to transfer knowledge, the technical training of producers, and the creation of conditions conducive to innovation. Coordination between research, the production sector and public policy will be crucial to consolidating the transition to circular models in the olive oil sector. The valorisation of olive grove by-products thus represents a strategic opportunity to enhance the sustainability, resource efficiency and competitiveness of the olive sector in Portugal.
